After a very successful career as an elementary teacher, administrator and an education specialist with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Suzie Botts Baier PC’73 was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in 2010. Unfortunately, a bone marrow match could not to be found and Suzie passed away September 2, 2011.
Before she left us, Suzie called a group of AGD sisters together and made a simple request: that a fund be established to help the Delta Beta undergrads financially during college. Suzie worked in the sorority kitchen during her college years and witnessed how worrying about the constant expenses could be stressful. A fund, known as Suzie’s Gift, accumulated nearly $5,850 to help our undergrad sisters.
The original administrators of Suzie’s Gift, Denise Kinder Parrish and Debbie Patterson Lisser, have seen the need to update the internet capabilities at Delta Beta and have generously offered Suzie’s Gift be donated to that project. Suzie was a dedicated educator and would have acknowledged the importance of providing the best educational experience for current and future Delta Beta sisters.
Suzie’s Gift
Suzie Botts Baier maintained a genuine regard for others that was nothing shy of world class. Helping people in any meaningful way she could wasn’t simply something she did, it’s who she was. It was her gift. She thought about it continuously, felt it regularly and lived it always.
What she didn’t do a lot of, however, was talk about it.
That was not her way.
Helping people who could use it was not only what gave her a meaningful sense of purpose, but consistently produced untold amounts of joy in the lives of many, many others - as well as in her own life.
Those who had the good fortune to know Suzie saw it frequently. It would often reveal itself in her eyes, in her heart and most obviously to those around her, in a warm and genuine glow that would literally light up her entire face, from one ear to the other.
That was Suzie’s Gift.
And she spent her entire lifetime only too happy to share it.
